If you're trying to choose a web designer in Ireland, you're not short of options — a quick Google search will throw up hundreds of freelancers and agencies. The problem is telling the good ones from the bad ones before you've handed over your money. Get it right, and you'll have a website that brings in customers for years. Get it wrong, and you'll be dealing with problems (and extra costs) for a long time.
As a web designer based in Kildare, I've been on both sides — hiring designers and being hired. Here's my honest guide to finding the right person for your project. You can also visit my homepage to see the kind of work I do.
What to Look For
1. A Strong Portfolio
This is the most important thing. Look at their previous work and ask yourself:
- • Do I like the style of their designs?
- • Have they worked with businesses similar to mine?
- • Do the sites look professional and modern?
- • Can I actually visit the live websites?
Be wary of designers who only show mockups or screenshots. Ask for links to live sites you can click around on.
2. Clear Communication
How quickly do they respond? Do they explain things in plain English or hide behind jargon? A good designer should be easy to talk to and make you feel comfortable asking questions.
3. Understanding of Your Goals
A professional designer will ask about your business, your customers, and what you want the website to achieve—before they start talking about colours and fonts.
4. Technical Knowledge
Your website isn't just about looking pretty. It needs to:
- • Load fast
- • Work on mobile devices
- • Be found on Google (SEO)
- • Be secure
Ask if these are included or if they'll cost extra.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
Warning Signs
- • No portfolio or only template examples - They might not have real experience
- • Prices that seem too good to be true - They usually are
- • Vague quotes with no breakdown - You'll get hit with extras later
- • Won't provide a contract - Protects neither of you
- • No mention of ongoing costs - Hosting, domain, maintenance
- • Pushy sales tactics - Good designers don't need them
Questions to Ask Before Hiring
- 1. Can I see examples of sites you've built for similar businesses?
- 2. What's included in the price? (Design, development, SEO, mobile, training)
- 3. What platform will you use and why?
- 4. Will I be able to update the site myself?
- 5. What are the ongoing costs? (Hosting, domain, maintenance)
- 6. What's your timeline?
- 7. What happens if I'm not happy with the design?
- 8. Do you offer support after launch?
Freelancer vs Agency
Freelancers (like me) typically offer more personal service and lower prices. You work directly with the person building your site. Best for small to medium projects.
Agencies have more resources and can handle larger, more complex projects. But you'll pay more and might not get as much personal attention.
For most Irish small businesses, a skilled freelancer is the sweet spot—professional quality without agency prices. Check out my guide on what websites cost in Ireland for more context.
The Bottom Line
Don't just go with the cheapest option or the first person you find. Take time to review portfolios, have conversations, and make sure you feel comfortable with the person who'll be representing your business online.
A good website is an investment that should pay for itself many times over through new customers and increased credibility. It's worth getting right.
